As we celebrate Gratitude Month, we’d like to express how grateful we are for all of the incredible restaurants we partner with – especially ones that share our mission.
One standout is The Migrant Kitchen in the heart of New York City. This culinary gem doesn't just serve up a delicious menu; it weaves together the diverse cultures that define the Big Apple. Plus on top of that they have also provided nearly 4 million meals to people in need.
Q: How did The Migrant Kitchen come to life?
A: The Migrant Kitchen was founded in 2020 to celebrate diversity through food. Our menu reflects the roots of our chefs, with dishes inspired by Mexico, El Salvador, the Middle East, and more. What started as an idea has since grown into a movement that connects people through the universal language of food.
Q: Can you tell us about The Migrant Kitchen Initiative and the inspiration behind it?
A: Almost immediately after launching The Migrant Kitchen, the pandemic caused an urgent need for meals in New York City. The Initiative became our way to give back by providing meals to those who need them most, including low-income families and marginalized communities. Since then, we've continued this mission and have provided nearly 4 million meals to those in need. Our belief that food is a human right drives us, and by offering meals rooted in diverse cultural flavors, we uplift people and celebrate the communities we serve.
Q: How has partnering with Sharebite amplified the impact of The Migrant Kitchen Initiative on New York’s food-insecure communities?
A: A portion of our sales directly funds meals for those in need, and through our partnership with Sharebite, we’ve significantly expanded the number of people we’re able to serve. Sharebite shares our values, and together, we've been able to increase our reach, providing even more meals to food-insecure communities across New York. Their support has made a real difference for many families and individuals across the city.
Q: In the spirit of Gratitude Month, how can people and other restaurants help feed their local communities?
A: During Gratitude Month, we’re reminded of the incredible impact small acts of generosity can have. For restaurants like ours, there are many ways to give back this season—by donating meals, partnering with local organizations, or organizing community events to bring people together. This Thanksgiving, we will hold several meal distributions in NYC to ensure everyone has access to a Thanksgiving meal. If you'd like to get involved, please visit tmkinitiative.org.
Q: How are different cultures represented at The Migrant Kitchen?
A: Our menu is a blend of global flavors that honors the many cultures that shape our city. We celebrate diversity by highlighting ingredients and techniques from around the world. Each dish tells a story and embodies the fusion of flavors that only a melting pot like New York can inspire. It’s our way of respecting the traditions and histories of the immigrant communities that inspire us.
Q: We’re sure it’s difficult to choose just one dish, but what menu item would you recommend to a first-time customer?
A: The toughest question of them all! I’d recommend the Slow Roasted Smoked Pork Bowl or the Lamb Torta. The Slow Roasted Smoked Pork Bowl is a comforting, flavorful option that combines tender pork with vibrant spices, turmeric rice, black beans, and our signature Chili Whip. If you’re in the mood for something handheld, the Lamb Torta is a must-try, featuring juicy roasted lamb, pickled jalapeños, and Oaxaca cheese. Both dishes perfectly represent our approach to blending cultural influences, making them ideal introductions to The Migrant Kitchen.
As we reflect on the profound impact of Gratitude Month, we're reminded of the collective power of our restaurant partners, like The Migrant Kitchen, who embody our mission with heart and dedication. Their unwavering commitment to celebrating cultural diversity through food, coupled with their remarkable efforts to combat food insecurity, truly inspire us. Together, we're not just serving meals; we're building communities, one plate at a time. Let's continue to celebrate and support these incredible initiatives, making a tangible difference in the lives of many.
